A capital de Pernambuco deve ser descoberta aos bocados
Recife não é a primeira capital que vem à mente de um viajante que decide ir para o Nordeste. Como diz Ricardo Freire, “Recife é para iniciados”. Suas atrações não estão tão à vista como alguns gostariam, mas quem se propõe a descobri-las pode se surpreender. Rios, pontes e overdrives (como cantava Chico Science) entrecortam a cidade, proporcionando um cenário no mínimo diferente. Há as casas restauradas da Rua do Bom Jesus, a primeira sinagoga das Américas, o Centro Cultural Torre Malakoff, o delicioso maltado da lanchonete Galerias… Tem a visita à oficina de cerâmica do artista plástico Francisco Brennand e o passeio de barco até os arrecifes para apreciar um falo gigante e polêmico (oficialmente, uma das peças do Parque das Esculturas)…
Fora de lá, Boa Viagem é uma das praias urbanas mais legais do Brasil (seu calçadão não deve nada ao do Rio). Nos anos 20, o recifense Gilberto Freyre publicava um bom conselho no Manifesto Regionalista: “Alimentar a cultura e dela se nutrir”. Poucas cidades brasileiras seguem a máxima do sociólogo com tanta espontaneidade quanto Recife. Tomada por arranha-céus, tendo seu megashopping e seus restaurantes japoneses, a capital de Pernambuco não se rende às modernices e cultiva as raízes de quase cinco séculos. E aqui não se fala das especiarias à venda no Mercado de São José para ser tomadas a sérios pretextos, mas do melhor da mistura de índios, negros, portugueses e, claro, holandeses: a cultura recifense.
A capital pernambucana nunca baixou a cabeça para outros centros do país. Nem deveria. Ela é a mais antiga capital brasileira, foi um dos primeiros portos e o centro de irradiação da cana-de-açúcar, que produziu o primeiro ciclo de riqueza do Brasil. Também é herdeira de um patrimônio histórico e arquitetônico valioso, fruto da mescla entre os domínios português e holandês - os dois povos que a disputaram no século 17. E está tudo ali, para ser visto e vivido: das pontes aos fortes e museus. Mas também corre muito sangue novo na vida cultural da cidade: do legado do manguebeat de Chico Science e Mundo Livre S/A ao regionalismo moderno de músicos como Otto e Lenine, passando pela penca de DJs de naipe internacional, o caldeirão de talentos do Recife produz agora uma geração inteira de criativos e premiados cineastas.
