O empresário Antônio Ermírio de Moraes não pára. Na última terça, ele abriu o Hospital São José, que pretende disputar público com centros médicos de ponta como Einstein, Sírio-Libanês e Oswaldo Cruz
O motorista encosta a perua Volvo em frente à entrada do novíssimo Hospital São José, no Paraíso. Do banco do carona, o empresário Antônio Ermírio de Moraes, 1,87 metro de altura e 110 quilos, sai e caminha lentamente em direção à recepção. Por que o quarto homem mais rico do Brasil, com uma fortuna estimada em 3,9 bilhões de dólares, segundo a revista americana Forbes, não senta no banco de trás? “Imagine. Seria muito pernóstico”, responde. “Pior que isso só se eu sentasse ali e ficasse fumando charuto.” Aos 79 anos, Antônio Ermírio cultiva uma fama quase folclórica de homem que rejeita qualquer tipo de ostentação. Passou duas décadas sem comprar um terno e durante anos usou roupas que herdou do pai, o senador pernambucano José Ermírio de Moraes, morto em 1973. Amigos contam que ele já saiu com um sapato de cada par e, alertado da confusão, nem se abalou. Além dos negócios do grupo Votorantim, que no ano passado faturou 33 bilhões de reais, sua menina-dos-olhos é o Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa, do qual é presidente, que atendeu mais de 325000 pacientes em 2006, 60% pelo Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS).
Na última terça, Antônio Ermírio se emocionou na cerimônia de inauguração do Hospital São José. Apesar de ter sido criado para disputar espaço com centros médicos cinco-estrelas como Einstein, Sírio-Libanês e Oswaldo Cruz, ele afirmou que ali serão atendidas todas as classes sociais. “A intenção é continuar a receber quem não tem condições de pagar”, disse. “Não será só para a classe privilegiada.” Foram investidos 60 milhões de reais (45 milhões na construção do edifício e 15 milhões na compra de equipamentos). “Nosso diferencial está na hotelaria”, conta Rubens Ermírio de Moraes, o mais novo dos cinco filhos homens de Antônio Ermírio (que tem também quatro filhas) e que vem sendo preparado para assumir as funções do pai no comando do Beneficência Portuguesa. O novo hospital impressiona. Na recepção, o piso de granito e as paredes envidraçadas lembram um edifício comercial sofisticado. Os apartamentos têm entre 33 e 75 metros quadrados e contam com varanda, TV de LCD e conexão com a internet. Mesmo quem precisa ficar na UTI não entra em contato com os outros pacientes, pois os catorze leitos ficam em boxes individuais. Toda a decoração coube à arquiteta Carolina Szabó, ex-presidente da Associação Brasileira de Arquitetos de Interiores e Decoradores (ABD).
Além da (justa) fama de desleixado com a aparência, Antônio Ermírio carrega a (também justa, diga-se) reputação de trabalhador incansável. Toda segunda-feira de manhã, comanda a reunião do conselho do Beneficência Portuguesa. Aos sábados e domingos, costuma visitar a enfermaria do hospital. Recita números como os 400.000 reais que o Beneficência gasta todos os meses com supermercado. Assina todos os cheques acima de 3.000 reais. Preside o conselho do grupo Votorantim e a Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio. Em suas empresas trabalham 60.000 funcionários. De segunda a sexta, ele despacha de seu escritório, na Praça Ramos de Azevedo, ao lado do Teatro Municipal. Entra às 9 da manhã e sai no começo da noite. Esse ritmo já foi bem mais intenso. Até 2005, o empresário chegava ao escritório antes das 7h30. Como nunca tratava de assuntos pessoais no horário de trabalho, às vezes marcava reuniões às 5h45 da manhã. “Ele vem diminuindo um pouco o ritmo desde que passou por uma cirurgia, há um ano e meio”, conta o sociólogo José Pastore, um dos poucos amigos que freqüentam a casa de Antônio Ermírio, referindo-se a uma operação para tratar de uma diverticulite, inflamação no intestino. Mesmo durante a recuperação, no Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa, o empresário assinava cheques e conferia notas fiscais.
Quando estudava engenharia metalúrgica na Colorado School of Mines, nos Estados Unidos, no fim da década de 40, descobriu por acaso que só tinha um rim. “Tive uma crise renal e fui ao médico”, lembra ele. “Ao me dizerem que eu só tinha um rim, achei que estava liquidado.” Décadas depois, um de seus 25 netos nasceu com o mesmo problema. Antônio Ermírio colocou, há oito anos, um marca-passo no coração. Essa intervenção o impede de fazer uma das coisas de que mais gosta: visitar os alto-fornos de suas indústrias. Passear por fábricas, aliás, é uma espécie de hobby. Na sua viagem de lua-de-mel, em 1953, visitou companhias de aço na Áustria e na Alemanha. “Ele diz que já tirou férias, mas, para ser sincera, não sei quando foi, porque não lembro”, afirma a mulher, Maria Regina. “Por causa de suas obrigações, ele não tinha muito tempo para a família. Sempre senti falta, mas aceitei.” Nos almoços que Maria Regina organiza todas as quartas-feiras, para reunir filhos e netos, Antônio Ermírio costuma brincar com as crianças de olho no relógio. Quer ver se não está atrasado para voltar à empresa. “Meu pai sempre me ensinou a ser simples e humilde”, diz a publicitária Regina de Moraes Waib. “Quando fiz 18 anos, ganhei um carro usado.” Devoto de São José, Antônio Ermírio não sai de casa sem se despedir das imagens de santos que ficam em um altar em seu quarto.
Seu maior arrependimento foi ter se envolvido com a política. Em 1986, aceitou um convite do Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB) para sair candidato a governador do estado. Ficou em segundo lugar, atrás de Orestes Quércia, do PMDB. “Quem perdeu foi o Brasil”, afirma o ex-ministro da Fazenda Delfim Netto. “Ele poderia ter promovido a revolução de gestão da qual o governo necessita há muito tempo.” Antônio Ermírio guarda daquela época algumas histórias pitorescas. Em campanha no bairro de Pinheiros, encontrou seu alfaiate. No meio da multidão, ele resolveu fazer uma cobrança: “Doutor Antônio, faz tempo que o senhor não vem fazer um terno…”. De pronto, Antônio Ermírio respondeu: “Fica quieto, senão espalho para a imprensa inteira que você é quem faz minhas roupas.” Respostas rápidas são um forte do empresário. Numa de suas andanças pelo centro, anos atrás, foi parado por um fotógrafo, que pediu para tirar um retrato seu. “Se eu fosse o Antônio Ermírio, você acha que eu estaria andando a pé na rua, sem seguranças?” O fotógrafo foi embora sem fazer a foto. Nem o papa Bento XVI escapou de suas tiradas. Em um encontro durante a visita do pontífice a São Paulo, em maio, o papa elogiou as obras sociais de Antônio Ermírio. “Você está construindo seu lugar no céu”, teria dito Bento XVI, segundo Pastore. “Não faço com essa intenção”, respondeu. “Coisas trocadas eu faço no meu trabalho. Fora do trabalho, não troco nada.”
A desilusão com a política acabou por estimulá-lo a escrever para o teatro. Prepara sua quarta peça, mais uma vez sobre problemas brasileiros. O mais famoso de seus textos, Brasil S.A., deve virar filme. A peça Acorda Brasil!, inspirada no trabalho do Instituto Baccarelli, na favela de Heliópolis, será tema da escola de samba Vai-Vai para o Carnaval 2008. “Ele aprovou a letra do samba e faz questão de ver todos os croquis de fantasias e carros alegóricos”, afirma o presidente, Thobias da Vai-Vai. “Até convidamos o doutor Antônio para ser destaque na escola, em um carro alegórico.” Antônio Ermírio retrucou como era de esperar: “Desfile, eu? Nem pensar!”.
